Arts + Climate Innovation: The Role of the Arts

Free event
Location: Te Manawa
View Map

Expert climate scientists, Professor James Renwick and Dr Tim Naish (Victoria University) will be joined by Track Zero Founder, Sarah Meads and local special guests: playwright and educator, Professor Angie Farrow; artist and educator, Professor Robert Jahnke; artist and co-founder of Snails Artist Run Space, Kirsty Porter and; artist and educator, Kura Te Waru-Rewiri.

Learn the very latest climate science. Be inspired by creative projects that help us to understand and care about our planet. Contribute to the conversation. Explore how more can be done, working with the power of the arts to inspire climate action – the biggest cultural challenge of our time.

We live in an increasingly hot, hungry and less equal world in which climate impacts disproportionately affect those most vulnerable. Scientists tell us we have a critical window – less than a decade – in which to act to prevent climate events that may be beyond civilisation’s capacity to adapt. The urgent need for far reaching social, economic and technological responses is not being matched by action.

The Arts + Climate Innovation Roadshow is travelling to locations from Whangarei to Dunedin. This is the 11th event. Join us for a timely conversation about how the arts can contribute to how we adapt to climate impacts and shape our carbon neutral future in Aotearoa New Zealand.

Have your say on the Government’s ‘TRANSFORMIN Have your say on the Government’s ‘TRANSFORMING RECYCLING’ proposals!
Te kimi whakaaro mō te panoni i te hangarua!
Closes 22 May
Too much rubbish is ending up in landfills and our environment adding to climate change, harming our waterways and oceans, and losing valuable resources and business opportunities.
There are 3 proposals:
1. Intro a beverage container return scheme (CRS) by 2025 (when you buy a drink you pay a deposit that you get back when you return the empty container. This is expected to lift container return rates to 85% or more. In a CRS, beverage producers pay the costs of collecting, transporting and processing the containers – part of 'product stewardship').
2. Standardise kerbside recycling collections across Aotearoa NZ and start collecting food scraps (by 2030 at the latest).
3. Require all businesses to separate their food scraps from their general waste (by 2030 at the latest).
MAKE A SUBMISSION 📝
Head to the @environmentgovtnz website - make a quick submission on any or all of the proposals or a detailed submission.
HELPFUL RESOURCES 💥
Check out handy resources prepared by zero waste experts to help see where the thinking is at and maybe take some ideas for your submission. Here’s a couple of examples, amongst others:

We only recycle and compost about 1/3rd of the materials we place out on the kerbside and 2/3rds go to landfills. This is reversed in high-performing countries where they recycle 2/3rds and landfill only 1/3rd. This is a big opportunity to do better!
